What is the History of Bee Cave, TX?
Bee Cave’s history goes back to early settlers in the 18th century. The first Americans to venture to the area discovered a large cave swarming with wild Mexican honeybees, resulting in its colorful name. They’re still there today, living along the banks of Barton Creek. After families began to settle there, a post office dubbed “Bee Caves” opened in 1870. In the 1880s, just 20 residents lived there. Back then, it was home to a small general store, cotton gin, church, school, and steam gristmill.
Despite the modest growth, Bee Cave failed to prosper in the coming years. The Bee Caves post office closed in 1915. Between the 1940s and 1980s, more people gained interest in Bee Cave, raising the population to about 50. In 1987, it became an incorporated city. That’s when the area truly took off. As nearby Austin grew, so did Bee Cave. Today, Bee Cave is home to many beautiful outdoor activities.
