What is the History of Dripping Springs, TX?
This rural community first started in the 1850s. Sometime around 1853, three families decided to move from Mississippi to Texas. In 1854, they reached the top of modern-day Wallace Mountain and decided to settle down. While it wasn’t too far from the Texas capital, it was still part of the unexplored frontier. The families began to cultivate valleys between Little Barton and Onion Creek. The area got its name from a local gathering place for Tonkawa natives, the Milk House Branch of the Edwards Aquifer system.
The first post office opened in 1857, and one of the founders, John Moss, became postmaster. By 1884, the population grew to 130, largely thanks to a steam gristmill and cotton gin. People continued to move into the area over the next century. It wasn’t until 1981 when Dripping Springs got its first mayor, that it became an incorporated town. Today, the population continues to grow, and Dripping Springs has a reputation for its charming surroundings, family lifestyle, and rural beauty.
