What is the History of Round Rock?

Like other areas of the Greater Austin area, Round Rock's human history goes back thousands of years. Even before the Tonkawa Native Americans roamed the lands to hunt, evidence of human habitation dates to the late Ice Age!

Round Rock started its journey to becoming a beloved city in 1851. Settlers formed a small community on the banks of Bushy Creek. They chose this spot because of a large round rock in the middle of the creek that eventually became a low-water marker point for those passing through. As the community grew, they adopted the name Round Rock in 1854. Fun fact: You can still see that rock in Bushy Creek near Chisholm Trail Street!

This city continued to develop during the 19th century. It's known for being the site of a historic gunfight between the Texas Rangers Division and infamous train robber Sam Bass in 1878. During the early 20th century, Round Rock's economy boomed thanks to the development of cotton fields. In the 1990s, the city was known as a 'bedroom community.' However, that changed when the Dell Corporation moved in, establishing its headquarters and creating thousands of jobs that helped the city prosper.
