What is the History of Liberty Hill?

Liberty Hill boasts small-town living while benefiting from being part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. Located about 29 miles northwest of Central Austin, Liberty is the personification of 'small but mighty.' The total area of Liberty Hill is just 1.9 square miles, and the population is only around 3,600. But despite its small size, the town has a reputation for its arts-based culture. This quaint town got its start in the 1840s. Settlers arrived in the area and stuck around due to its beautiful natural surroundings. Growth was modest in the first decade. But by 1853, the town got its first post office. The first postmaster, William Oliver Spencer, suggested Liberty Hill, which stuck. The post office was about three miles outside of the townsite. Over time, Liberty Hill slowly moved east as it developed. In 1871, S.P. Stubblefield, an Alabama native and Mexican War veteran who moved to Liberty Hill, built a structure that would serve as a general store for the next decade. He made it out of hand-cut limestone, and it's believed to be the oldest building in Liberty Hill standing today. Liberty Hill remains a small town, but its history is evident everywhere. Many historic buildings remain, and preservation efforts likely paved the way for the town's rich artistic culture. Today, Liberty Hill is known for its sculpture garden, art galleries, and festivals.
