What is the History of Liberty Hill?
This quaint town got its start in the 1840s. Settlers arrived in the area and stuck around due to its beautiful natural surroundings. Growth was modest in the first decade. But by 1853, the town got its first post office. The first postmaster, William Oliver Spencer, suggested Liberty Hill, which stuck.
The post office was about three miles outside of the townsite. Over time, Liberty Hill slowly moved east as it developed. In 1871, S.P. Stubblefield, an Alabama native and Mexican War veteran who moved to Liberty Hill, built a structure that would serve as a general store for the next decade. He made it out of hand-cut limestone, and it’s believed to be the oldest building in Liberty Hill standing today.
