What is the History of Tarrytown?
Modern-day Tarrytown used to be a massive farm spanning 365 acres. Known as “Woodlawn,” the farm was home to a pre-Civil War mansion. The mansion, built in 1853 for Texas Comptroller James Shaw, still stands today! Two Texas governors owned the building throughout its history, and it was officially added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1970.

They formed two building companies that would go on to develop many historic neighborhoods. The first phase of Tarrytown opened in 1934. By 1939, the Tarrytown Shopping Center opened for business.
