What is the History of Georgetown?
The founding of Georgetown occurred in 1848. It got its name from famous settler and legislator George Washington Glasscock. Glasscock and his partner, Thomas B. Huling, generously donated land as a site for a brand-new town. Many pioneers looking for a place to settle chose Georgetown for its timber, fertile lands, and clean water.
In 1873, Southwestern University opened its doors. Georgetown quickly became a mecca for academia, and the University still stands today. It’s the oldest college in Texas. A few years later, a railroad moved through the area, spurring even more growth. The economy quickly developed, and most of it revolved around agriculture.
Cotton was the most important crop in Georgetown from the 1880s to the 1920s. Crop diversification gave the people of Georgetown new ways to keep the economy thriving. Unfortunately, a massive flood in 1921 caused the city to refocus. A dam on Lake Georgetown opened several decades later, providing much-needed flood control for the area.
In the 1970s, downtown Georgetown began to show its age. The city invested in its revitalization. Restoration projects brought historic Victorian-era buildings back to life, many of which are part of the National Registry of Historic Places. The newly improved downtown area, paired with many housing developments in the late 1990s and early 2000s, saw Georgetown become the prosperous city it is today.
